Some interesting reflection on why batteries are part of the Ammonia solution

Today we got charged with knowledge on why batteries can play an important role for the Ammonia solution. There was a great interest among our members, and more than 60 people had signed up to join the webinar.

The presentation was given by CEO and Founder of Amon Maritime, André Risholm, followed by a Q&A session. André introduced Amon Maritime and their ongoing projects, why Ammonia is an interesting future fuel, as well as how batteries are part of the Ammonia solution.

During the presentation, he explained some of the main benefits of Ammonia, e.g. that it is carbon free (no CO2), and the cost and physical properties compared to alternatives such as hydrogen. Another benefit is the global availability of Ammonia. André showed an overview of the existing global Ammonia infrastructure from the DNV Alternative Fuels Insight platform (link to the platform can be found below). Furthermore, he emphasized that for displacement vessels the volumetric energy density is more important than the gravimetric energy density, of which Ammonia is competitive.

André talked about their ongoing projects with Viridis, developing the “FlexBulk” project with Client Partners. The main goal is to build an efficient zero emission logistics network, and have Ammonia powered ships delivered in 2024/25. He also presented a new joint venture “Azane Fuel Solutions” where Amon Maritime is developing turn-key solutions for ammonia bunkering terminals together with Econnect Energy.

Even though many view Ammonia as an interesting fuel it has, like its alternatives, some challenges. André shared his reflections on how batteries can improve the Ammonia solution and its challenges. Poor combustion at very low loads was given as an example of a challenge, where batteries may be installed to improve the vessel operation at low loads (such as for maneuvering and in port). Another example brought forward was the initial fuel cost compared to conventional fuels. In such a case, a battery system may increase the total fuel efficiency and that way contributes to a lower fuel cost.

It will definitely be interesting to follow the development regarding Ammonia as a future fuel, as well as Amon Maritime’s ongoing projects.
