Webinar - Marine-MCS: The Lighthouse in Zero-Emission Vessel Charging

The webinar “Marine-MCS: The Lighthouse in Zero-Emission Vessel Charging” provides a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in high-power charging solutions for electrified maritime transport. The session begins with an introduction to maritime electrification, highlighting the drivers, challenges, and opportunities associated with the transition toward zero-emission vessels. Building on this foundation, the second presentation explores the technical design and implementation of a 3 MW Megawatt Charging System (MCS), addressing key engineering considerations for safe, efficient, and scalable charging infrastructure. The webinar concludes with a real-world demonstration of the HYPOBATT system, showcasing practical insights, operational experience, and the potential of innovative battery and charging technologies to accelerate the decarbonization of the maritime sector. Together, the presentations illustrate how advanced charging solutions can support the future of sustainable and emission-free waterborne transport.

About the HYPOBATT Project

HYPOBATT was a European research and innovation project focused on accelerating the electrification of maritime transport through the development of a modular, interoperable multi-megawatt charging system for electric vessels.

The project brought together 18 partners from 10 European countries from industry, research and academia. Its work covered the complete charging ecosystem, from grid connection and power conversion to automated vessel–shore connection, control, safety and system integration.

A key achievement was the real-world demonstration of the developed multi-megawatt charging system in Norddeich, Germany, in February 2026, where the technology was demonstrated with two different vessels. The project showed how high-power charging can support efficient electric ferry operations while contributing to reduced emissions and improved interoperability between ports.

HYPOBATT also addressed standardisation, stakeholder engagement, knowledge transfer and future deployment, helping to create the technical and organisational foundations for the wider adoption of high-power charging infrastructure in European maritime transport.
