MBF Webinar: Ventilation Regulations for Battery Spaces on Battery-Powered Ships

As battery-powered and hybrid vessels become increasingly common, differences between class society rules and flag state regulations can create uncertainty for designers, shipowners, and system integrators. This webinar will provide a clear and practical comparison of ventilation requirements for battery spaces as defined by class rules from DNV and the proposed new regulations from the Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA).

The session brings together regulators, class experts, and industry to explore how these regulatory approaches differ, why they differ, and what the implications are for the safe and efficient integration of battery systems on board ships.

What to expect

The webinar will consist of three focused presentations followed by an interactive discussion:

Sverre Eriksen (DNV)

An overview of ventilation requirements for battery spaces according to DNV class rules, including the underlying safety philosophy and practical design considerations.

Arne Brathole (Norwegian Maritime Authority)

A presentation of the NMA’s proposed new ventilation requirements, explaining regulatory intent, scope, and expected impact on Norwegian-flagged vessels.

Kolbjørn Berge (Corvus Energy)

An industry perspective on how differing ventilation regulations influence battery system integration, engineering choices, and project execution.
