Challenges of Lithium-ion Installations in Super-yachts and Private Vessels.

David O´Neill is a 40-year veteran of the industry, with an original background in Boat-building, Naval architecture and refit engineering. A lifetime sailor he has worked and lived on vessels from small dinghies to large Superyachts. For the last 30yrs he has been mainly working in the Marine industry hub in Mallorca. During this time, he has often mixed design, planning and installation work of heavy refits. 20 years ago he luckily married a kindred spirit in Magda who was not only a professional Captain, but also a very high level programmer. They often work together to cover the physical and control challenges we often see in the marine industry. As Lithium family products have entered the market there has been a big learning curve for vessel owners, project managers and installers. This is happening across all sizes of vessels and all styles of solutions, from minor upgrades, to full electric or hybrid drives.

David and Magda work with AkuPalma as part of their technical support teams to help smooth this knowledge transition. Specifically, over the last year part of that support has extended to presenting a major training course to support Marine Surveyors in assessing advanced installations on vessels. The course is the first of its type and its focus is to increase vessel installation safety, not just at the battery level, but across the whole vessel install. This has been done in conjunction with the IIMS (International Institute of Marine Surveying), one of the largest surveyor organizations in Europe.
