Maritime Market Insights - Battery Powered Cargo Ships

This document is created by the Maritime Battery Forum to inform members of the Maritime Battery Forum on the latest maritime battery market insights for cargo ships. The insights in this document are based on the statistics from the MBF ship register updated in January 2024.

This document contains the following parts:

  1. A short summary of the trends identified in the use of batteries on board cargo ships

  2. A comparison between the statistics for inland, coastal, and deep-sea cargo ships

  3. An individual analysis of the statistics for inland, coastal, and deep-sea cargo ships

  4. Statistics are shown per number of ships and per installed capacity

For each type of cargo ship an analysis has been made on:

  • Overview

  • Ship types

  • Insights per operational area

  • Propulsion configuration type

  • Newbuilds versus retrofits

  • Battery chemistry

  • An outlook based on the ships on order or under construction

  • A table of figures

The MBF ship register is considered to be one of the most complete databases with battery powered vessels globally. However, it does not cover 100% of the global battery powered fleet. The MBF is constantly working on updating the data in the ship register to keep the information as accurate as possible.

The Maritime Battery Forum cannot be held responsible for any decisions made based on information from this document. All MBF members are allowed to access the MBF ship register to be able to make their own market analysis.
